An exploration of what consists of an ideal husband beyond the confines of four walls
Following the roaring success that was ’12 Angry Jurors’, last weekend Igiza Arts kicked off the year with yet another adaptation, this time of Oscar Wilde’s ‘An Ideal Husband’.
This is the classic story of a revered government official tied up in a dirty scheme that threatens to ruin his reputation, all rooted in blackmail.
Robert’s goody-two-shoes image, amplified by his wife Gertrude who places him at the apex of the highest of pedestals, comes tumbling down when his past transgressions are revealed. It is a past tainted by fraudulently gaining wealth, a reality that now haunts him and destroys his marriage.
The play stresses on some of the unrealistic expectations and needless idolisation of male figures within and beyond their households. Jeff Obonyo’s portrayal of Robert brought a comic flair beneath the character’s tense circumstances, with his conspicuously hilarious facials on stage.
A rock in Robert’s shoe, Edna Kariuki’s ‘Ms’ Manda’ was a force, her conniving personality left one on edge of what she might do next as she was determined to make Robert’s life a living hell.
Exploring male idealism in a broader scale sure did live up to the play’s title though it occupied a bit too much of the runtime that would have come in handy in character development for the supporting roles, one in particular being Gori, a dive to his goals even though he was referred to as the ‘Idlest man in Nairobi.’
