Set designer shares his journey from visual inspiration to audio execution
In the rarefied world of set design in theatre and film, Allan Otieno has made a name and deservedly stands at its frontier. What many do not know is his considerable expertise in audio show production.
This goes back to his high school days when he used to write scripts and then spruce it up with some art, flourishing his comic artistry skill set.
With the visual imagery occupying much of his attention, on campus, he had to contend with the big question of executing grand ideas amid high production costs.
That’s how the idea of audio shows was born and after a pitch to his friend and producer, Ian Kairu, work began.
A camaraderie was also born and nurtured between the two creatives as they effortlessly managed to tap into each one’s vision, creating room for more collaboration. Some artists and friends from his alma mater KCA University assembled, and the projects; Visitors from the Past, and Forgive Me, Father were born.
Like all productions, the projects haven’t been an easy ride for producer Ian. Still, they sure have broadened his skills in audio editing through frequent practice and engagement with other sound technicians to execute the intended vision.
