It all begins with Mwanzo. Brian Mwanzo, that is. Ten years ago, at a local church in the heart of the Rift Valley, he brought together a group of thespians under the Artflame Theatre Network with a goal of catapulting and growing the theatre culture in Eldoret.
He had just gone back home after spending years networking with theatre practitioners in Nairobi during his campus years. The time was ripe, Mwanzo felt, urged on by a desire to take the plunge with his newly-acquired knowledge in producing plays at the local church and then levelling up to set books.
From 2014, Artflame now easily produces original scripts and FULA, which will be showing there this weekend, is their 17th original play. The performance will be at KVDA Auditorium and Mwanzo is its playwright and producer.
Written by Mwanzo and directed by the award-winning thespian Wakio Mzenge, FULA explores the conflict between modernity and tradition over the years. Alongside the performance, there will be workshops and training for actors curated by Wakio Mzenge.
This play seeks to break down the stereotypes and misconceptions about both tradition and modernity, emphasising the importance, place and positive impacts of both. Mwanzo is quick to repeat the oft-quoted reality of life; you can’t know where you’re going if you don’t know where you came from.
Be careful not to be overshadowed by someone’s tradition, for modernity is also someone else’s tradition,”he adds
Now quite handy at it, building theatre awareness for the younger generation is another one of Mwanzo’s goals, with an emphasis on produce family-centred plays.
FULA will be staged on February 25 at KVDA Auditorium in Eldoret. Nyakua tikiti yako sasa hivi via www.2tokee.com
