First, forget everything you know about traditional filmmaking. This film feels like story za jaba come to life in the most cinematic and hilarious way. From the very first frame, this delightfully unconventional movie grabs you by the funny bone and refuses to let go.
One of the things that truly makes this film shine is the unapologetically Kenyan brand of comedy. The humour is sharp, irreverent, and, above all, relatable. Whether it’s the old-school charm of veterans like Shix Kapienga, Dru Muthure (Mustafa), and Ben Tekee or the fresh-faced talent of newcomers Afrikan Njogu and Shosho wa TikTok or the familiar faces like Bruce Makau, Nyokabi Macharia, Gloria Songoro, Duncan Murunyu, Andrew Levi and Morris Mwangi (who in my opinion as the young’ins say, ate and left no crumbs) the casting choices hit the mark, delivering laughs that resonate with the audience.
Then there’s that ability to find humour in the everyday, to take the mundane and transform it into something side-splitting. The execution of this film of taking a seemingly simple story to create a masterpiece, truly speaks to the genius of all involved in its creation. This talent is truly unique to our culture, and “Sketchy AF” showcases it with aplomb.
Serious laughs
But this movie isn’t just a laugh-a-minute romp. Beneath the surface, it explores the trials and tribulations of the common mwananchi in this economy and, more so, the creative process, reminding us that the journey to bringing a vision to life is never a linear one. The personalisation imbued in every frame adds a level of authenticity that resonates deeply. Even the credits, often a perfunctory after-thought, ooze personality in ‘Sketchy AF’. It’s a testament to the level of care and attention the team has poured into every aspect of this production.
Director Vincent Mbaya fostered a democratic set, as revealed by Chris Kamau. This allowed contributions to the script and further enhanced the sense of ownership and passion that permeates from every pore of this entire production.
The writing process, to quote Ben Tekee, which is often shrouded in mystery, became relatable and engaging as the film takes us on a journey through the creative minds behind it.
What sets this movie apart is the sense of genuine ownership the cast and crew share as some of the actors are turned associate producers in this film. They’re not just actors reading lines—they’re co-creators, each bringing their unique flair to the table.
In a landscape where Kenyan films often struggle to find their footing, ‘Sketchy AF’ stands out as a refreshingly original and unapologetically Kenyan production. It’s the first in a series of “Sketchy” films, and if this is any indication, we’re in for a treat.
So, if you’re in the mood for a sketchy cinematic ride that perfectly captures Kenyan humour, creativity, and camaraderie, then Sketchy AF is your golden ticket. Screening this week at Prestige Cinemas and Motion Cinemas Greenspan Mall, this is not just a film—it’s a full-on experience. Sketchy AF will leave your cheeks hurting, your sides splitting, and talking about it long after the credits roll.
It’s dutifully Crazy AF…
