Climate Advocacy Meets Theatre

Last Thursday, climate advocacy was spiced up with quite an interesting story

A Climate Story, curated by 492 Korna Hub, took an interesting path in showcasing two perspectives: those who advocate for climate action and those who are manipulated in opposing the former. In the piece, desperate citizens are offered employment to cut trees to construct a hospital and government houses. Activists visit every news platform to debate with the ‘politician’ and provide scientific knowledge to citizens, this only creates more havoc due to the adamancy of the opposition; the politician with ulterior motives obviously can’t let the project go, and the tree-cutters want to get paid.

A Climate Story took a daring approach in showcasing how a yearly discussed subject in the UN also affects local households with relatable plot points that made a part of the ending poignant. I say part because a plot twist designed as a redemption arc for the villain felt unnecessary, not quite serving the story.

All improvisation, the performers were exceptional in their timing making each one’s delivery breathe and serve the purpose of the story.

The piece had a lot to give, but not enough time; perhaps with more time, some plot points would have had the chance to be explored. However, the piece sure did implant some questions; I hope that was the case for the rest of the audience, propelling them to action.
