…sci-fi can also be about exploring the impact of actual or imagined science on human psychology or behaviour…” Likarion Wainaina, Subterranea director via variety.com

This morning, Kibanda Pictures released the highly anticipated Subterranea trailer after a cast reveal clip went viral on the interwebs.

Created by Brian Munene alongside writers Martin Kigondu (County 49) and Arnold Mwanjila (Taliya), Subterranea, a Showmax original series, is Kenya’s first sci-fi series that brings together eight distinct characters chosen to test a bunker system for eight weeks, with a grand prize awaiting the survivor. However, what begins as a controlled experiment soon spirals into a high-stakes battle for survival as the world collapses.

Filled with dramatic tension, unexpected twists, and relentless ‘what next’ moments, Subterranea challenges its characters to face the ultimate reality: survival was just the beginning.

With a star-studded cast comprising; Foi Wambui (“Crime and Justice”), Peter Kawa (“County 49”), Nice Githinji (“The Caller”), Melvin Alusa (“Country Queen”), Melissa Kiplagat (“Country Queen”), Philippa Ndisi-Herrman, Makena Kahuha (“Kina”), Biko Nyongesa (“Sense8”), Pauline Komu (“Groove Theory”), Dadson Gakenga (“Subira”) Chintu Chudasama, Subterranea, promises a thematic cocktail of family, PTSD among our armed forces, male postpartum depression, unity and cults, as stated by Creator Brian Munene via variety.com

The aforementioned themes sip in from the 8 characters forming the bedrock of the series’ overarching story.
