East Africa’s percussion queen unveils her soul in ground-breaking single, ahead of album East Africa’s celebrated percussionist Kasiva Mutua reveals an extraordinary new dimension to her artistry with the release of Ndikweteela, a single that proves there’s more to this drumming virtuoso than meets the eye.

In a stunning revelation of her artistic range, Kasiva steps into the spotlight not just as a master percussionist but as a compelling vocalist and storyteller. Ndikweteela showcases her remarkable transition from rhythm-keeper to complete artist, weaving together percussion, voice, and profound storytelling.

Ndikweteela tells a story that resonates with anyone who’s experienced the complexities of long-distance love. Through poignant Kamba lyrics and masterful instrumentation, Kasiva captures the bittersweet journey of separation and healing, transforming personal experience into universal emotion. The track serves as both a tender goodbye letter and a “watch me thrive” anthem, all wrapped in infectious rhythms.

The single brings together an impressive array of musical traditions: the hypnotic rhythms of Maloya from La Réunion, the infectious groove of Kenya’s coastal Chakacha, and the powerful Isukuti beats from Western Kenya. This thoughtful fusion creates a sound that’s both deeply-rooted and refreshingly contemporary.

Shot in the majestic landscapes of Ol Donyo Nyokie, the music video is a powerful statement. The scene of Kasiva drumming alongside a Maasai man dancing challenges traditional gender roles while celebrating cultural heritage, embodying her role as a pioneer in African music.

Album ahead Ndikweteela serves as the perfect introduction to DESTURI, Kasiva’s highly-anticipated debut album, set for release on February 14, 2025. As a TED Global Fellow and Okay Africa 100 Woman honouree, Kasiva continues to push boundaries and redefine what it means to be a female musician in contemporary Africa. With Ndikweteela, she’s proving that sometimes the best way to heal a broken heart is to give it a really good beat.
