Atlanta-based Kenyan DJ and music producer, Michael Ndung’u aka Folly Focus, dabbled into new musical territory with the release of a first-of-its-kind AI visualiser for his single, Olodo. Produced by Yung Willis, the track features Nigeria’s Niniola and South Africa’s Sho Madjozi, two prominent continental artistes who infuse their unique cultural influences into the mix, as it injects fresh vitality into the realms of Afrobeats and Amapiano with an exhilarating high-energy beat, irresistible melody and clever wordplay.
The title ‘Olodo’ is derived from Yoruba, and it playfully admonishes those who are slow tounderstand or learn, capturing the light-hearted mocking commonly found in various African cultures.
Born and raised in Nairobi, Fully Focus is known for his mind-blowing mixes and has over the past two decades played a significant role in breaking African music on mainstream platforms. By launching his own show, Midweek Motivation on SoundCloud, in 2011, he was among pioneering promoters of Afrobeats before it gained acceptance on American radio and reached over 1 million plays and listeners across 50 countries.
His commitment to African music has earned him recognition and relationships globally. In 2020, he won the Best African DJ Award at Afrimma (African Muzik Magazine Awards). Through his independent label, Passport Music Group (PMG), he now aims to further elevate the conversation about the continent’s music and culture. Olodo is off Focus’s latest album, African Ambassador, which experiments with diverse sounds, from Zoul, Amapiano, Gengetone, Afrobeats, Bongo to Kizomba. Thus far, the African Ambassador has surpassed 10 million streams online, with the ten-track album also featuring music by Kenya’s Llumi, Bien, Nyashinski, AY (Tanzania), Slap Dee (Zambia), Djodje (Cape Verde) and Davis D (Rwanda).
One of the things I enjoyed about collaborating with other producers is learning instruments and sounds that are dear to their culture and tweaking them to match the ideas I had in mind
