If you’re a theatre enthusiast and have sat through a Millaz Productions play, the name Brian Gaitan sure does ring a bell.
Known for his sense of humour on stage, Gaitan thrills his audience with impeccable range and he is willing to invite you, the reader, behind the curtain. This is his story.
After his aspiration of becoming a lawyer somehow got overtaken by events, Gaitan faced immense pressure as an only child. From suggestions to pursue a career in nursing or joining the military, the gruelling but real question,’What next?’ hovered endlessly in his psyche.
The looming search for something worthwhile led him to the thought of a career in music, with the desire to learn musical instruments like the guitar, until one call pivoted him to a different direction.
There was an organisation in need of volunteers in an arts-related venture, and a close friend had linked him up with that opportunity by giving him a reference.
I think it was out of a desperate moment that I accepted, I needed to get out there and do something,” he recalls.
Under the H.A.A.R.T Kenya organisation, he was introduced to the world of acting and it was here that he appreciated how he could escape into a free world, which is how he realised he now finally had something to pursue.
A constant search and attendances in auditions followed, which landed him at Liquid Arts Productions, performing set-book pieces at various schools. This shifted his interest from music to acting, he now confesses that the thought of music could have been out of desperation.
But there was that other constant constraint, the financial one. This sparked another interest, public shows.
Gaitan harnessed the very power of manifestation and wrote down in a freshly-bought book the production houses he’d like to work with, on the list was, Millaz Productions. After a brief conversation with Mike Ndeda who referred him to Emmanuel Chindia (Writer and Director), Gaitan found himself on the set of ‘Merchants of the Iron Snake’, with his signature laugh making a memorable debut. Having found a home in Millaz, Gaitan went on to play more diverse characters, showcasing multiple ranges besides his humorous charm.
With more definitely to come, Gaitan has his eyes focused on film, the need to explore his potential in front of camera.
Gaitan dreams of owning a production company, to give up-and-coming creatives a chance to explore their potential just as he was.
