The fifth edition of The Butterfly Effect (TBE), wings its way into the scene tomorrow at the Jockey Club of Kenya, Ngong Road. This year the cultural experience will be headlined by the Rn’B artiste Karun, who is making waves in the nascent but growing alternative music scene, alongside her talented musical band.
Other supporting artistes include DJs Tina Ardor, Ms Bune, Mumbe and Jirani, and TBE’s in-house DJs. Karun has remained prolific, years after starting off with the BET nominated hip-hop group Camp Mulla in her early teens, maintaining a steady trajectory and crafting her sound.
Since going solo, the Afrima 2021 nominee has made notable career strides such as being featured on Forbes Top 30 Under 30 Africa list (2019) and won awards such as “R&B Artist of the year” at the Cafe Ngoma Awards. Her honest meditative style has seen her music get global appeal and land on shows such as Fox TV’s ‘The Resident’ and more.
TBE, which brings together a fusion of sounds, has witnessed a steady growth over the last four editions since last year. According to DJ Panik, one of its founders, the musical experience is heavily tasked with breaking stereotypes around alternative sounds in Kenya.
“The typical mindset is often boxed into specific genres and not exploratory of the positive vibes that different sounds provide. Most shows tend to be single-genre, and no longer take people through a musical journey,”.
More importantly, the TBE musical experience seeks to provide an avenue where events tie into productive community engagements and social initiatives. Proceeds from the event will be directed to partners, Heels for Pads, which seeks to raise awareness of period poverty while advancing gender equality and equity through menstrual health education workshops and access to sanitary pads.
