JSO’s History of Kenyan Theatre @Goethe Institut

The highly-acclaimed John Sibi-Okumu has been a colossus, bestriding Kenya’s stage and film scene as actor, director and playwright, as well as broadcaster and moderator. He honours us with his presence as we look back at the history of Kenyan theatre, the diverse artistic movement and its ever-changing place in society.

Date: September 30, from 5pm

Spot On @ KNT, Ukumbi Mdogo

Liquid Art Entertainment’s latest play, ‘Spot On’ follows the turbulent journey of Marcus, a man in his middle years entrapped in the clutches of addiction. Once a successful marketing executive with a promising future ahead, he grapples with his escalating reliance on drugs as a coping mechanism to deal with mounting pressures and lingering traumas. Can illogical choices clash with logical reasoning?

Heartstrings @Alliance Francaise

‘Rock and Hard Place’ is the latest comedy by winners of the Kenya Theatre Award’s Theatre Company of the Year Award, Heartstrings Entertainment. The show opened on Thursday and runs till Sunday, October 1.

The 39 Steps @Braeburn, Gitanga Road

The Olivier and Tony award-winning play is showing in Kenya for the first time ever, in a mix of a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, adding a dash of Kenyan flavour and you have the intriguing, thrilling, riotous and unmissable comedy. ‘The 39 Steps’ opened on Thursday and runs through to October 1.

‘And Mark Said, “He What?!’ @ Phoenix Theatre

This is a solo performance of the Gospel of St Mark by veteran Kenyan thespian, Asiba Asiba, with director Mueni Lundi. In ‘And Mark Said, “He What?!’ our main character is a mystic, a rebel and a revolutionary who intentionally uses the motif of secrecy to communicate.

Dates: September 30 (3pm and 6pm) & October 1 (3pm and 6pm)

Venue: Phoenix Theatre, at The Professional Centre
