After a License to Steal was issued by Millaz Productions on August, the troupe strikes again this October with a tune-in worthy wave of Frequency. Frequency is the compelling examination of gender-based violence, maternal health, and the critical role that journalism plays in promoting social justice; a clarion call to empathy and action.
Written and directed by Emmanuel Chindia, with Faiz Ouma and Mugambi Ikiara as Assistant Directors, and Rodgers Ninja as Musical Director, this latest Millaz production kicks off with a premiere event on Friday, October 18 at the Kenya National Theatre.
Frequency is set against the backdrop of a busy radio station. The drama is on a wide cast of people, including journalists, activists, and survivors, whose lives intersect as they deal with the challenging circumstances that women endure daily in society. They relate their experiences through moving discussion and dramatic scenarios, highlighting the pressing need for reform and responsibility.
The play highlights the transforming potential of free speech while following the individuals as they manage their personal and professional problems. It also invites viewers to participate in discussion and consider their own roles in promoting a more just and equal world. Frequency is a stark call to viewers to pay attention, get informed, and give voice to those who are disenfranchised.
Frequency shines a spotlight on communities to face and demolish the patriarchal institutions that sustain violence against women, tackling femicide in an effort to challenge the culture of violence, start discussions about prevention, and push for more robust legislative protections for women in the workplace.
This spotlight involves the freedom that comes with free speech, and advocating for the protection of journalists as vital voices in advancing accountability and transparency.
With a unique setting and thought-provoking thematic foundation, Frequency promises a theatrical experience like no other.
