This Saturday, July 22, the critically-acclaimed Mistaken Identity will be back for a third screening at Gravity Amusement Park, along Eastern Bypass. Directed by Fabby Grace Njongoro, the Kenyan-run and student-led film premiered on May 13 at Anga iMax Diamond Plaza this year, a collaboration of Film Gurus in partnership with Dace Media under KCA University. The dedication by the filmmakers and efforts put in by the students in making the film were highly applauded.
Mistaken Identity follows the lives of Gun (Collins Otieno), a fierce gang member tasked by his gang leader Big Fish (Eugene Kwach) alongside his comrades King (Geoffrey Karabilo), Kamau (Buxton Wafula), Issa (Levi Kaugu), Ahmed (Ondicho Jeremiah) and Bakari (Ndiangui wa Muya) to abduct the daughter of a man who owes Big Fish. The gang however abducts the wrong girl and in order to protect the secrecy of his base of operations, the gang leader orders the killing of Celine (Amanda Birgen), a decision that splits the group into two and infighting within the gang ensues. What follows are intrigues, plots and counterplots as long-seated differences and rivalries are revealed, tearing right into the gang members’ families when, for example, Gun reveals that it is Big Fish who killed his mother (Suki Wanza). What started out as a simple instruction snowballs into a gang war as the film escalates the rivalry between the two emerging main characters.
Following its successful premiere, the film had its second screening in June at Unseen Cinema Nairobi, partnering with Sanaa Post and Sanaa Academy for an insightful session with Frank Oyosa, Peter Kawa and Andrew Evans Odera.
As a student-led project, the film’s quality is a promising marker that is set to accomplish more breakthroughs in the industry, a fact that was acknowledged when the production departmental heads were promised an opportunity to apprentice in the next film that will be shot by Andrew Evans Odera.
During this Saturday’s screening, there will also be a live performance by rapper, Mikal.
