Hold onto your scripts, aspiring stars! MTV Shuga Mashariki just pulled that prodigal son move, returning to the Kenyan scene after a decade-long hiatus. For three days, the University of Nairobi’s main campus transformed into Kenya’s own Hollywood Boulevard, open auditions turned lecture halls into launchpads, giving fresh-faced talents their shot at stardom.

The MTV Staying Alive Foundation successfully wrapped up open auditions for the highly-anticipated return of MTV Shuga Mashariki, proving that some comebacks are worth the wait. Aspiring actors from across Kenya flocked to the UoN, each hoping to be the next big thing.

MTV Shuga has always been more than just pretty faces tackling challenging issues. It’s a career catapult disguised as a TV show, a launchpad for discovering new talent – just ask Lupita Nyong’o, the likes of Nick Mutuma, who even went ahead and had roles in MTV Shuga Naija and Shuga down south and is now Kenya’s most sought-after actor, producer and director.

This season promises to continue that legacy, introducing fresh faces and dynamic new actors to its ever-expanding audience. It’s like a talent factory through and through. Imagine being in the same show that some of our very own seasoned actors launched their acting careers from.

The show’s revival builds on substantial evidence that youth-centred storytelling can drive meaningful shifts in societal norms. For those itching to stay in the loop, you can follow MTV Shuga Mashariki on Instagram, X, and Facebook. Don’t forget to check out the MTV Staying Alive Foundation.

Audition in progress

The MTV Staying Alive Foundation has been serving up this ground-breaking, original content since 2009.

MTV Shuga is a multi-platform experience, complete with radio shows, digital content, social media buzz, and on-the-ground activities. They’re integrating vital health messaging into storylines that reflect real youth experiences across Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Cote d’Ivoire, and India. It’s like a global health class, but you actually want to attend.

MTV Shuga Mashariki is on a mission to spark change through storytelling. The show’s revival builds on evidence that youth-centred narratives can actually shift societal norms. Who knew binge-watching could be so… educational?
