I’ve always been intrigued by Prevail Prevents’ ability to craft stories that leave you questioning and coming to terms with sensitive aspects of one’s past and present. They often induce the urge to transform or be at peace with…well, a lot of what makes me a human being, especially ones written by Martin Kigondu, as was Of Cords and Discord.
This new Prevail Presents venture, also directed by Martin Kigondu follows two sisters, Joan (played by Mwikali Mary) and Jane, adopted (played by Celestine Gachuhi), recounting past childhood and early adulthood events that have marked their life trajectory at the behest of Joan’s invitation, only for Jane to discover that the catalyst of this conversation was unexpectedly, fatal.
A who-done-it thriller, Of Cords and Discord thrives at turning back the clock with a blend of hearty, comedic, suspenseful, and gut-punching interactions that lay out with ease and precision who the characters play out to be and who they really are. From Joan’s loose demeanor to an unhinged persona. and Jane’s upbeat, goody-two-shoes vibe, to a fragile and sincere being, all is laid out with exceptional pacing.
From the minute I walked out of the Austin Theatre Hall, I must admit, I was conflicted. See, from the very beginning, the dialogues lay bricks that edge closer to believing that Joan did it, and no, I’m not laying it all out for you, buy a ticket. Okay, so where were we? Oh, right. Joan’s reasons are justified, not right, but the sincerity made it impossible for me to come to terms with the rushed confession by Joan. The sudden withdrawal of itching to know why she did it and to be validated by most of the play felt…odd. It didn’t quite serve as Blessed be the Fruit and many others did.
I would like to know from those of you who have watched it, am I thinking too much, or do you agree?
