In tandem with the country’s political temperatures, Play Reading Kenya, curated by Esther Kamba and Joseph Obel, couldn’t resist bringing Adipo Sidang’s critically acclaimed Parliament of Owls to the Goethe Institute auditorium.
The book, which is now part of the curriculum, acts not only as a metaphor but hits the right chord for any Kenyan citizen who comes across it. On Friday, March 21, 2025, a dramatized performance through play reading came close to an on-stage performance, helmed by readers who gracefully gave their memorable renditions of beloved characters such as Money Bags Owl, played by Mudamba Mudamba, who fused the character’s insidious personality with a comical ‘Mubabaz’ vibe.
Oyundi the Fire Finch Owl and Ochongorio played by Sharlette Ondiegochiah and Zennah Achieng had two things in common, apart from fighting for justice among the Flock of Birds, they were brought to life with jaw-cracking luo accents. Both performers brought the house down with every delivery. Speaking of justice, Tel Tel, played by Agnes Kola, never wavered in declining offers from the Royals Owl’s cronies, a representation of citizens and civil servants who won’t bend a knee to the conniving powers that be.
Without spoiling much, the play adopts a rare balance of humor and political thematics backed by brilliant performances from Marichu Muturi, Arthur Sanya Muiruri, Mugambi Ikiara, Muthoni Gathecha, Kere Koga, Sharlette Ondiegochiah, Zennah Achieng, Mudamba Mudamba, Amani Tugi, Marko Lukyamuzzi ‘In the Flesh‘, Agnes Kola and Tenney Wairimu that brought a clear visual rendition in one’s imagination.
