It initially started as a coming together of concerned members in April last year, followed by a ‘kick-starter’ meeting in August of the same year and then, in September this year, a Special General Meeting to set in place what would culminate in a new and vibrant office at the Kenya Actors Guild (KAG).
In a record three months, the previous committee organised two hybrid general meetings and virtual town halls for aspirants to share their manifestos one week before the AGM. This in itself has never been done before.
That proves to all that teamwork elicits proficiency and efficiency.
It was therefore befittingly anticipated that yesterday’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Kenya Cultural Centre would mark a new dawn for KAG with a clear main agenda: elect a new office.
The groundwork had already been in place and the mood was abuzz, with various contenders bringing with them a wide range of experience in the industry, each with something to offer.
Aspirants presented their manifestos for the crucial offices of Treasurer, Secretary and Chairperson, with members showing enthusiasm at resuming that chance to exercise a democratic right, long held in abeyance, and vote for whom they deemed best-suited.
Running for the National Treasurer’s office were Alfred Munyua, Janet Bulinga and Martin Githinji, with Martin Githinji winning. The National Secretary’s office had attracted the interests of Lawrence Osano, Mike Njeru and Wakio Mzenge. Wakio Mzenge scooped the spot.
The position that held much anticipation, that of National Chair, also had three worthy contenders with Victor Muniafu, Peter Kawa and Kebaya Moturi vying. Peter Kawa emerged as the new National Chairperson of the KAG.
Other than the three spots, the Guild constituted a committee to ensure their interests and growth are smoothly taken care of.
The new KAG committee members are;
- Estar Kahuha – Welfare
- Kevin Onyiso – Membership
- Lydia Gitachu – Finance
- Nice Githinji – Programmes and Capacity Building
- Riziki Ambrose – PR and Marketing
- William Mwangi – Legal Affairs
With ‘People, Processes and Partnerships’ being the three thematic pillars on which the new chairperson promised to prop the rebirth of KAG, actors can only look forward to the addressing of long-standing issues to ensure the Guild wins the trust of stakeholders.
The new office also comes in at a time when there are Bills in parliament touching on the world of creatives and laden with proposals on their representation, further necessitating the need for a robust respected voice speaking for Wasanii.
Congratulations to the new officeholders, na kazi ianze!!!
