We’ve all been there, that intoxicating rush when you meet someone who just gets you. The inside jokes that materialize out of thin air. The conversations that stretch into dawn. The giddy certainty that you’ve found your person, the one who truly understands you in a way no one else ever has. But what happens when understanding someone at the beginning doesn’t mean you’ll understand them forever?
We really need to talk about the lies we’ve been sold about love.
“S.he Gets Me,” the debut feature from acclaimed Kenyan filmmaker Millicent Ogutu, strips away the romantic fantasy to reveal something far more valuable: the raw, unvarnished truth about what it takes to build a life with another person.

Set against the vibrant backdrop of contemporary Nairobi, this 60-minute meditation on modern love follows two strangers who meet by chance and fall fast. Their connection is immediate, their chemistry undeniable. Through playful banter and direct confessions, they build what feels like an unshakeable foundation. Marriage follows. Children arrive. A life takes shape.
And then reality sets in.
What makes “She Gets Me” so powerful is its unflinching honesty. Director Millicent Ogutu and screenwriter Brian Munene have crafted a relationship drama that doesn’t choose sides, doesn’t offer easy answers, and refuses to wrap everything up with a convenient bow.

There’s no villain. No hero. Just two people who loved each other and still managed to destroy what they built. Just two people trying to figure out where it all went wrong, and whether understanding that even matters anymore

Together with producers Likarion Wainaina and Bruce Makau, and the team at Kibanda Pictures, they’ve created something that feels both intensely personal and universally recognizable.
Angela Mwandanda (HER) and Joe Kinyua (HIM) create a chemistry that’s equal parts magnetic and toxic. You can’t look away, but you kind of wish you could.

In an era of curated social media relationships and highlight-reel marriages, “She Gets Me” is a necessary corrective. It’s a film for anyone who’s ever felt the gap between expectation and reality in their relationship. For anyone who’s wondered if love is supposed to be this hard.
For anyone who’s ever asked themselves: “Do they still get me? Do I still get them? And if we don’t–what now?” The film screens at the Kenya National Theatre on Wednesday, 11 February from 5.30 pm. Get your tickets here
