Kinyanjui believes that story-telling in our mother tongue maintains relatability. “Thiomi Citu” is a Kikuyu phrase that translates to ‘Our languages’ or ‘Lugha zetu’ in English or Kiswahili respectively.
With over 40 languages in Kenya, some with several dialects to boot, the potential for each of these ‘tongues’ to add colour and make a unique mark on the storytelling canvas through cinema is diverse yet unharnessed.
This was the thinking behind the formation of Thiomi Citu Entertainment, as evidenced in their latest novel work of art, a short film titled ‘THAUTI’. Written by Derrick Kinyanjui and shot by Collins Kipchumba, this collaborative effort seeks to lift a lid on the weighty subject of mental health.
It is a brief introductory work, opening up what is going to be a series of monologues and collaborations as Derrick Kinyanjui continually delves deeper into the subject and seeks to partner with more players on this new venture he seeks to grow.
A huge fan of Indian Cinema where there are various regions, each producing in its dominant dialect, Kinyanjui wants to see more works that take pride in our language through cinema.
From language stems culture and with the adage of story and character-driven pieces, an impeccable work of art is produced,”he opines, articulating his vision of blending language, culture, relatability in story-telling with spectacle.
