Twende Tuwatch Faiz, this phrase seeks to encapsulate what May 30th has in store: not just a theatrical experience, but one that invites you to a man’s perception of himself.
A conversation with Faiz Francis Ouma provided me with an opportunity to gain insight into his mindset regarding his new venture. Let me be clear, this is not about his journey as an actor, a typical perspective one might form from viewing a one-man show, but rather an exploration of self-discovery, personal growth, and manhood.
Fortunately, the man himself generously shared notable events over six years that led him to this point. Mesmerized by the camera back in high school, Faiz developed an interest in journalism, even creating a broadcasting network. This changed when a transfer to St. Dominic Rabango introduced him to cultural dance, igniting his passion for performance and a desire to act in plays. After high school, he engaged with set books and performed in productions such as Jicho 4 and Fanaka. This experience paved the way for his first public show with Millaz Productions titled, Game of Thornes, marking the beginning of many collaborations.
2019, a year that ushered in a redemptive path to the screen. The renowned ‘Next Superstar’ show featured Faiz performing a stage-defining monologue that earned him a spot in the semi-finals despite a prior elimination, serving as a lesson to never fumble when given a chance. As a third runner-up, he secured a role in Kenya’s first film to be available on Netflix, Sincerely Daisy. The role brought him acclaim, as he became one of the first actors in his generation to appear on Netflix, but it also forced him to confront the dynamics of the Kenyan Film Industry. In a bid to satisfy his hunger, Millaz provided a worthy outlet, honing his skills not only in performance but also in stage direction.
An act of goodwill, however, propelled him further. Assisting a fellow performer rehearsing an audition led him to submit a tape of a character that intrigued him in the sides: Castro. Upon delivery and earning a callback, Volume came to be, his name spoken by many with love for his portrayal.
“The greatest currency is human currency.” These words became practical, and it was time to seize the opportunity. Unlike the perception imposed on an actor’s career of working from one project to another, Faiz had something else in mind: how can I unpack this basket full of life and professional experiences into something worthwhile for me, granting me liberty in my journey and freeing me from the mercies of other men? Hence, It’s Such a Good Time.
This venture is not only driven by a love for the arts but also acts as a genuine expression of generosity, inviting you to connect with the performer and see a reflection of yourself.
Intending to make this an annual phenomenon, Faiz aims to exercise his Artipreneurial mantle by creating job opportunities and game-changing partnerships that will surely define Kenya’s art sector for years to come.
