It was a Sunday evening well spent at Kenya Cultural Theatre’s Ukumbi Mdogo where Tûri a Mûmbi Productions roared on the stage with a hilarious installation titled Theci Noore.
Comedic and with a ton of twists, Theci Noore, directed by Njomo wa Nyathira and Maina wa Ndambiri, also marked a long-awaited reappearance of the beloved Tûri a Mûmbi Productions.
Jimmy (Maina wa Ndambiri), finds himself in a tight spot when his girlfriend Njeri (Maggie Qutee) reveals she is pregnant. This leads to an escalation between the two that results in Njeri demanding Sh1.5 million to keep it under wraps from Jimmy’s wife, WaSandra.
Jimmy’s friend, Ritho (Njomo wa Nyathira), covers Jimmy from his employee Mutiso by lying that Njeri is his wife. However, it all blows up when WaSandra (Joy Kaki) shows up to surprise her husband on their anniversary before Ritho’s real wife, WaLiam (Naomi Mburuh) also joins in and all hell breaks loose. Truth is painstakingly unboxed including the revelation by WaSandra that Jimmy underwent a vasectomy, meaning he couldn’t possibly be responsible for Njeri’s pregnancy.
Theci Noore was a well-structured comedic experience. It was enjoyable watching the cast giggle at their jokes, creating an even more immersive response. Most of the comedic moments served as setups and payoffs, a sparingly utilized technique that served the audience with unforgettable moments.
Each character stood out in a script that made them all have their charm. WaSandra’s stoic and independent personality stood out from Ritho’s recklessness, backed up by commendable performances from actors; Njomo wa Nyathira, Maina wa Ndambiri, Maggie Qutee, Naomi Mburuh, Joy Kaki, and Eric Chege.
