The wait is over!
The statement above was already an expectation for a handful of actors before it was released. The call came at a time when the announcement of a new and running office ignited a personal drive around one question: How do I join?
On March 11, 2025, the Kenya Actors Guild announced that they’re recruiting new members and actors were ready, but not without a line of concerns they wanted met once they joined. Through a series of polls and questions, it was and still is evident that actors are not just going in blindly.
Legal, a phrase that requires a lot of understanding, and creatives haven’t shied away from taking that leap, especially in three branches: Contracts, Copyrights and Royalties. A poll was taken on March 5th on which of the three is a top legal concern. Reflective of years of conversations around it, contracts went home with the win. A released statement from February 25 2025 outlined that the guild under the Legal Committee led by William Mwangi will allow Actors to access affordable legal advice, copyright and royalties included and contract reviews to protect their rights.
Creatives are always hungry to learn, to equip themselves to be able to keep up with the world of film and theatre that keeps advancing every single day. With that, credible sources of knowledge are pivotal, and that hunger manifests in the actors’ need for credible workshops, advocacy, and networking outlets. In comes the Programs and Capacity building committee led by Nice Githinji, which is up to the task.
As a creative, I have a rush, the kind of rush that most of the time outruns logic. This rush either makes or breaks my financial progress, and yes, the latter has happened quite often. Financial literacy and accountability are personal and necessary principles for anyone. In the uncertain environment of creating, the unpredictable graph requires an external hand to equip one with knowledge on how to sustain their finances. The Finance committee, led by Lydia Gitachu, provides just that, and future financial prospects that terms like pensions and insurance transition from terms to reality.
The Kenya Actors Guild has an array of benefits, the above being just the tip of the iceberg. Follow all Kenya Actors Guild social media platforms; Instagram X for more information.
