HOW IT STARTED!

Too Early For Birds is a series of theatrical storytelling productions of a history class you will never forget. Since 2017, they have narrated stories about Wangari Maathai, The Nyayo House Survivors, Zarina Patel, Timothy Njoya, Field Marshal Muthoni Wa Kirima, Otenyo Nyamatere, Syokimau, William McMillan, the resistance at Lumboka and Chetambe forts, Wangari Maathai, amongst many others.

HOW IT’S GOING!

And this time, to tell stories on crime. A break from political stories and a take on Kenya’s Crime Scene. Stories of some of the baddest Gangstas to ever walk the 254 soil (but then again, kasongo exists); gangstas so hardcore, they were feared by the people and police equally. You’ve probably heard the names, whispered in family gatherings, by your older relatives and they sounded like urban legend but, they are real – Wanugu, Wacucu and Rasta – before, but did you know that these three were students of Muhindi mentorship program? I know, unbelievable! How badass do you need to be as a gangsta, to start a mentorship program and then go on to raise some of the baddest gangstas? Or about Rasta’s girlfriend Mary who Rasta loved so much, he got her an AK47 as a sign of his love for her (Source? Si ni mimi ndio nakushow). Remember, girlies, never settle for less! If he wanted to, he would!

Written by Hellen Masido, Kagichu Maina, assisted by the most able fellow, Richard Oyamo lead by Head Writer, Bryan Ngartia, this edition will have you at the edge of your seat.

THE JOURNEY THAT HAS BEEN.

Unsung Heroes – Edition 1:  The first volume was staged on the 17th of May 2017 and focused on people who never made it to Kenya’s mainstream history. It was produced by Miriam Kadzitu of Code Ink and directed by Wanjiku Mwawuganga.

Dissent – Edition 2: The second edition ran on the 29th and 30th of July. It focused on Kenyan stories of resistance. It was produced by Miriam Kadzitu of Code Ink and directed by Wanjiku Mwawuganga.

Badassery – Edition 3:  This edition told stories from the history of violent crime in Nairobi. It was staged on the 13th and 14th of January of 2018. And again, on the 19th, due to public demand. It was produced by Miriam Kadzitu of Code Ink and directed by Wanjiku Mwawuganga.

Brazen – Edition 4: The Brazen Edition was executive produced by the LAM Sisterhood and Story Zetu Limited. Brazen was created, researched and written by the LAM Sisterhood, who are Laura Ekumbo, Aleya Kassam and Anne Moraa. It focussed on telling stories of heroic women in Kenyan history, and was staged by a team composed entirely of women – both in cast and crew. It was staged on the 27th, 28th and 29th of July 2018. It was produced by Gathoni Kimuyu and directed by Wanjiku Mwawuganga.

Tom Mboya – 5: After a long break, the team came together again in October of 2019 at The Visa Oshwal Community Centre with stories from the life and death of Tom Mboya. It was produced by Gathoni Kimuyu and directed by Mugambi Nthiga.

TEFB Into the Multiverse of History – 6: After surviving COVID-19 (barely), we got back with stories from different times of history. It was staged on 4th, 5th and 6th of November 2022. This edition was produced by Gathoni Kimuyu and directed by Bryan Ngartia and was staged at Jain Bhavan, Loresho auditorium.

Tom Mboya – 7: After the success of Tom Mboya in 2019, the same cast and crew got together again and staged the story of Mboya on 2nd, 3rd and 4th August 2024 at the Jain Bhavan auditorium, Loresho. The show was a huge success, it got an encore and was re-staged on 21st, 22nd, 23rd and 24th November 2024 at the same auditorium and on 25th January 2025 at the Oshwal Centre, Parklands. This edition was produced by Gathoni Kimuyu and directed by Mugambi Nthiga.

AND NOW

Badassery – 8: and now, the team is taking a break from political stories to restage crime stories. First staged in 2018, a collaboration between Owaahh of owaahh.com; this edition will be staged again on the 20th, 21st and 22nd June 2025. Produced by Gathoni Kimuyu and directed by Wanjiku Mwawuganga at the newly renovated JAIN BHAVAN, LORESHO
