When Gaming Meets Theatre

What happens when you blend the interactive energy of gaming with the emotional power of theatre? Well, you get something entirely new, a creative space where climate conversations transform from lectures into lived experiences, where audiences become collaborators, and where the next generation takes the lead in reimagining our future.

Think beyond controllers and screens, this is gaming as you’ve never experienced it. Here, the mechanics that make games addictive, choice, consequence, collaboration, and real-time problem-solving, become the building blocks of live performance. Participants have discovered that gaming’s interactive DNA creates something theatre alone cannot: stories where the audience doesn’t just witness outcomes, but actively shapes them.

More Than a Show

This isn’t your typical theatre performance. Participants aged 13-28 have been working together in innovative brainstorming sessions, diving deep into the question: how can gaming mechanics enhance theatrical storytelling? Through unconventional methods that merge play with serious purpose, they’ve discovered that games aren’t just entertainment but powerful tools for exploring complex realities, testing solutions, and building empathy.

It’s the first time trying to merge gaming and theatre, it’s our own creation,” reflects participant Sally Oliech, capturing the excitement of this groundbreaking collaboration.

Fellow participant Terry Ng’ang’i adds that

Games as a medium of change”

Games are transforming how conversations happen and creating space where dialogue shifts and evolves organically, and where every voice becomes part of the collective story.

Expect to Be Part of the Journey

Forget passive viewing. This performance invites you into a “creative land” where community development and artistic expression intertwine. You’ll be immersed in stories born from the minds of young climate advocates, guided by expert facilitators who understand that real change comes not from one voice, but from the “symbiotic interactions between us.”

The rehearsal space itself is symbolic. Rehearsing at the prestigious Kenya National Theatre, the country’s seat of theatre, the ensemble has been exploring uncharted creative territory under the guidance of UK theatre expert and facilitator Tony Cealy. His philosophy centers on improvisation and emergent storytelling, “bringing awareness to each unfolding moment”. At the same time, participants discover how gaming mechanics can amplify theatrical storytelling and how personal choices connect to broader social and environmental challenges.

A Coalition of Changemakers

Behind this groundbreaking project stands a carefully curated network of organizations, each bringing unique expertise to amplify the impact: The final showcase promises to be more than a performance, it’s a conversation catalyst that could reshape how we approach climate action. And what better venue than the iconic Kenya National Theatre, where groundbreaking stories have found their voice for generations? This is participatory democracy in action, joyful, creative, and accessible. It’s about co-creating not just stories, but the policies and practices that could build a more equitable future.

Ready to Join the Revolution?

Whether you’re 13 or 80, whether you’re a climate advocate or someone just beginning to explore these urgent conversations, this experience has space for you. This isn’t about bringing video games to the stage; it’s about harnessing the participatory magic that makes gaming so compelling and using it to tackle the most pressing issue of our time. Every choice matters, every voice counts, and every participant becomes both player and protagonist in stories that could reshape our collective future.
