First, let’s get one thing out of the way; insurance is a necessity

Let us take a closer look at the insurance question among actors. Numerous cases of injuries that are not being covered by production are becoming rampant. Hard stares from bills deem insurance coverage as a dream, and don’t get me started on massive unemployment gaps.

For a long time, actors have been helping one another to pay hospital bills. Confessions of some with chronic illnesses battling one day at a time since they can’t afford premiums yet they have been working for decades breaks one’s heart.

On the 16th of February, the Kenya Actors Guild joined DCCAK (Digital Content Creators Association of Kenya), Kenya Writers Guild, HEVA fund, AAR Insurance, WIFA (Women in Film Awards), and WIFT (Women in Film and Television) in launching the LUMESA pilot insurance program covered by AAR.

But before we get to the nitty-gritties, we must admit that this would have worked without the cooperation of creatives to come as an organised union. If one person complains, noise is made, if a group of people airs grievances, change is made. For every actor reading this, this program and many more are possible under one voice; the Kenya Actors Guild.

Governmental policies are possible for us if an organized voice casts proposals. Imagine being identified in a ministry of our own, you won’t have to lie about your profession to obtain a visa. Join and be part of the change happening. For every other creative out there, join an association.

LUMESA, an insuretech start-up, is the bridge to actors and insurance cover. In partnership with AAR and in cooperation with the Kenya Actors Guild and the aforementioned, a program was launched to both inpatient and outpatient individuals.

This doesn’t only lean on one’s body, equipment is a vital part of one’s sustenance hence the importance of ensuring it for them as well.

This development is a game-changer, so don’t miss out on any new information about it in the future.
