Kenya’s premier screen industry celebration, the 14th Kalasha International Film and TV Awards, is officially back. It has officially kicked off its voting season following a high-energy nomination ceremony. This edition is the biggest yet, spanning 40 categories, drawing from over 100 submissions in the film and TV entries.

Of the 40 categories, 18 non-technical categories are open to public vote, with the platform having opened today. The People’s Choice Awards will be determined by 100% public voting. For those who want to see the nominated films before casting their ballot, Anga Cinemas in Nairobi and Kisumu are screening them for free, with the schedule said to be released later on.

The 14th edition also introduces two new categories that will cater to the digital creators, which KFC say are still being curated, a sign that the awards are actively responding to the evolving content creator landscape.

Ledama Sempele, Jury Chairperson for this edition, set the tone for the ceremony with a candid and encouraging read of the submissions. His key takeaway was that Kenyan storytelling is growing in confidence and craft. The themes dominating this year’s entries include gender-based violence and female genital mutilation, as well as the realities of urban life, love and relationships. The jury noted a clear rise in creativity and authenticity, with filmmakers reaching for experimental narrative styles and, notably, the integration of AI in production workflows. Regulatory bodies echoed this sentiment, observing more diverse and mature stories coming through the pipeline.

The jury was equally direct about where the industry still has work to do. On the creative side, filmmakers were urged to invest more time in script development and strengthen overall narrative structure, with the jury acknowledging that the potential is clearly there. Performance was another area flagged, with the jury citing that stronger actor direction and deeper character work would elevate productions to the next level. Television received its own pointed critique, with the jury calling for greater originality and innovation, underlining that TV carries a unique responsibility to shape audience expectations for the wider film industry. Beyond craft, the jury pointed to children’s content as a largely untapped opportunity, and stressed that the industry needs to more boldly embrace emerging technologies

On compliance, a number of entries were disqualified for failing to meet submission requirements, specifically, not providing valid screening links and classification certificates, and filmmakers were encouraged to ensure full compliance in future editions.
