Wicked Comes to Nairobi

The Wicked film premiere in Los Angeles last month drew massive crowds. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo walked red carpets in custom gowns that referenced their characters. Fans showed up in elaborate costumes. The photos went everywhere.

Now Nairobi gets its version. On Friday, 21st November, Anga Diamond Plaza 2 is hosting a red-carpet premiere of Wicked: For Good, complete with the full treatment, including arrivals, photography, costumes, and more.

It is offering something most people don’t get: the chance to see a major release the way premieres are meant to be experienced, rather than just showing up to a regular screening in jeans.

The format is straightforward. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. for red-carpet arrivals. Professional photographers will be there. The screening starts at 7:00 PM. The dress code is “Character in Oz” with green and pink as the main colors, so there’s room to interpret that however you want. Some people will go all out with full costumes. Others will just lean into the color scheme. Both work.

What makes this worth considering is timing. The film is still in that window where people are actively talking about it. A month from now, that conversation dies down. Right now, it’s still live.

There’s also something to be said for showing up to things. Nairobi doesn’t get premiere events for every major release, and when they do happen, they’re often invite-only or prohibitively expensive. This one is open and accessible, which is rare.

If you’ve been meaning to see it anyway, this is probably the better option than waiting for a regular screening. You’ll get a chance to be part of the initial premier audience and the ability to say you were actually there for it.
