Long before the Mau Mau, there was Waiyaki wa Hinga. This is the explosive true story of Kenya’s first great resistance leader. When British colonial forces arrive in the 1890s, Gĩkũyũ Mũthamaki Waiyaki wa Hinga initially tries diplomacy. But when requests for cooperation turn into demands for submission, he draws a line in the sand. Waiyaki wa Hinga captures the tense standoffs, the betrayal, and the ultimate sacrifice of a man who refused to bow to an empire.
MUTHAMAKI Waiyaki wa Hinga was a visionary leader who stood against the colonial invasion of his land. This play brings his story to life beyond the history books, showing us the man, the leader and the choices he was forced to make. After a successful first run, Waiyaki wa Hinga returns to the Kenya National Theatre, giving audiences another chance to experience his story on stage. It’s not just a RERUN, it’s a fresh rebirth.
Ndúnyú Njerú has set out to tell our indigenous stories in our language. For preservation for our upcoming generations, for entertainment and to honor those who came before us. Waiyaki wa Hinga the play is a culturally charged, authentic play set to preserve our heritage and to offer a theatre experience like none other. Acted in Gĩkũyũ but narrated in a hybrid format of English and Swahili, the play invites Gĩkũyũs and Non-Gĩkũyũs alike to enjoy the magic and get to learn about Kenya’s first freedom fighter.
