What happens when a man celebrated as a national hero is remembered very differently by the people who know him best?
That question drives The Penalty, a new Kenyan stage production written by Simiyu Barasa, directed by Ted Munene and produced by Estar Kahuha. The play will be staged at the Kenya National Theatre on Sunday, 8 November 2026, at 2:30 PM as part of KITFest 2026.

Set in the world of Kenyan football, The Penalty follows the contested legacy of Musa “Baba” Muthee, a legendary footballer whose public image clashes with the memories of his two estranged sons.
As a stadium prepares to honour Musa, his sons arrive carrying years of resentment and conflicting versions of their father. Johnnie wants to expose the truth behind the national myth. Tom, who has spent years protecting his father’s reputation, believes the man behind the legend was more complicated than either hero or villain.
Then Musa appears—not simply as a memory, but as a ghost confronting the people and events that shaped his life.
Blending family drama, humour, psychological tension and elements of magical realism, the play examines fatherhood, masculinity, sacrifice, emotional absence and the legacies passed from one generation to the next.

Beyond football, The Penalty asks questions that resonate across families and society. Can providing for the people we love become a substitute for being present? Can we understand a parent’s choices without excusing the pain they caused? And how should a nation remember its heroes when the private truth is more complicated than the public story?
The Penalty invites audiences to look beyond sporting achievement and consider the human lives behind it.

Brought to life by Justin Mirichii, Arthur Sanya, Nick Ndeda, Charlie Gachanja, and Sky Kahuha, The Penalty premieres Sunday, November 8th 2026 at the Kenya National Theatre. Grab your tickets here
