Stay: A Resonant Portrayal of Faith Through Turmoil

I used to think faith is about being perfect, but maybe it’s about staying. Staying despite the embarrassment, staying eventhough a miracle seems far from reach…

I’m paraphrasing, but the above statement from a beautifully satisfying epilogue by David, played by Brian Nyachae sums up the play; STAY with meticulous precision.

David, a police officer is forced to lie in a case statement involving domestic violence and as a believer, that shatters him. After attempting suicide, he grows close with Kui, a physical therapist who not only walks hand in hand with him in his path to physical healing, but also mental and spiritual growth. A terminal illness however causes Kui’s passing, but David proves even more resolute in remembrance and reverement of Kui’s impact in his life.

STAY, shines because of its two stars, Naomi Gichuki (Kui), and Brian Nyachae, who effortlessly portray the very grounded nature of the story and their characters. One can easily spot the deep understanding of their characters through every micro movement and expression. Nyachae’s delivery of his first set of monologues in the first half faltered, as if narrating; putting intonations less in mind, but when he shared the stage with his co-star, the best of his character manifested.

The set was minimal but intentional, and every blocking served a purpose thanks to revered director Martin Kigondu. However, members of the crew clearing of props while the dialogue was still ongoing threw one off a little.

Hats off to Naomi Gichuki for such a compelling script, poignant and yet not preachy eventhough it leaned heavily on Christianity as a source of hope for its characters. This brought a level of understanding and resonance that I bet anyone from any belief system would relate to.
