Now streaming on Showmax, Biko Nyongesa’s ‘When the Gods Argue’ grapples with the sometimes-precarious battle of Religion vs Tradition.
Murambi (Sam Adino) is a man of integrity, commitment and loyalty. In an attempt to honour his deceased father, he strives for a seat at the village council, an assembly dominated by selfish and hypocritical elders who demand for favours if they are to consider him.
However, Murambi’s belief in the old gods and his hue and cry against the council’s misconduct results in his rejection in the council over an entitled, Saisi Juma (Michael ‘Smallz’ Munyoki).
From a script by L. Biko Nyongesa and Wamuyu Wanjiku, ‘When the Gods Argue’ takes you on a ride, shoulder-to-shoulder, with what its protagonist Murambi is willing to do to prove his worth until his fate takes a sharp turn.
It lives up to its title as the gods roll the dice upon the fate of their loyal devotee.
Backed up by fairly good performances, the supporting roles would probably have gained more traction in advancing their arcs, to avoid leaving questions such as, ‘What is the root of Saisi’s entitlement? or ‘What opinions did Murambi’s father hold with regards to the council?’
