Since its premiere on Showmax last month, this troublesome foursome has kept audiences guessing.
Step aside, Charlie’s Angels! Jiji has grabbed the spotlight one month since its debut on June 17. This fast-paced new series on Showmax brings us Nairobi’s very own band of badass women, taking on the gritty underbelly of one of Nairobi’s toughest neighbourhoods, Jericho aka ‘Jeri’.
In Jiji, we meet four young women who could give any action hero a run for their money.
Led by the fierce and fabulous Julz, played by Fridah Mumbe, this quartet isn’t fighting crime – they’re diving headfirst into it, all in the name of survival. Don’t be fooled though- these aren’t your typical criminals. Each character is a delicious cocktail of complexity, dreams, and desperation that’ll have you rooting for them even as they break every law in the book.
There’s the vivacious Vee, played by Sybil Colette, who, after Igiza, left us yearning for more of her on our screens. She is the brains of the operation, whose number-crunching skills would make Wall Street weep.
Fresh-faced Aicy Stevens debuts as Mwende, bringing charm and charisma that could melt the coldest of hearts (and empty the fullest of pockets).
Rounding out the crew is Nungari Kiore as Achie, the muscle with a heart of gold and fists of steel.
Of course, every great story needs a villain, and Keith Chuaga is delightfully despicable as Jericho’s kingpin, Makali. He’s the shadow that looms over our girls, threatening to snuff out their dreams faster than you can say, “Hands up!” But the drama doesn’t stop on the streets.
These girls have families too and we’ve got Wakio Mzenge bringing the heat as Mama Julz, who rules her household with an iron fist. Balancing her out is George Mo as Eddie, Julz’s dad, the gentle giant who sometimes cuts the image of a vanquished man, always ready to shield his daughter from her mother’s wrath.
Ywaya Xavier is serving up some serious spice, proving that crime in Jericho isn’t just dangerous – it can be downright delicious. The star-studded ensemble that brings Jericho to life also includes Nick Kwach, Bridget Shighadi, Marcus Ochieng, Benson Ojuwa, Emmanuel Mungo, Helena Waithera, Anita Wawuda, Diana Luvanda, Carlyn Karagai, and Kendi Taylor.
The story starts with, quite literally, the death of innocence when they kill off the most promising character in the first episode. Sure, they rip off that band-aid quickly but trust me, it only means the real rollercoaster is just beginning.
With that tragedy setting the stage, we’re in for a wild ride that’ll have us gasping, cheering, and probably yelling at our screens.
So, buckle up, Jiji is here to prove that in Nairobi, girls of a feather don’t just flock together – they rob together and do it in style.
