Filled with glitz and glamour, Fabby Grace Njongoro’s Film MISTAKEN IDENTITY was met with a fabulous premiere at Anga IMAX Diamond Plaza 2 Parklands, with the cinema halls packed with raving audiences.
The Film follows Gun (Collins Otieno), a fierce gang member tasked by his boss, a gang leader named Big Fish (Eugene Kwach) alongside his comrades (‘King’ Geofrey Karabilo, ‘Kamau’ Buxton Wafula, ‘Issa’ Levi Kaugu, ‘Ahmed’ Ondicho Jeremiah, ‘Bakari’ Ndiangui wa Muya) to abduct the daughter (Amy Muthoni) of a man endebted to him. The gang however captures the wrong girl, Celine (Amanda Birgen). To protect the secrecy of his base of operations, Big fish orders the killing of Celine, something Gun contradicts. With the gang split into two, one side supporting Gun, the other Big Fish, a fight ensues, Gun and his allies manage to escape.
Ras (Hitilafu Riet), Big Fish’s devotee succeeds at finding Gun and his allies, with his comrades, Ras captures Gun, Celine manages to escape but Ahmed (Ondicho Jeremiah), Gun’s devotee is killed in the confrontation. Strapped to a chair, Gun is tortured by Big Fish and at this moment, he reveals that he knows it was him who killed his Mother (Suki Wanza) and that he’s managed to take him down. Police arrive at Big Fish’s base of operations and arrests him and his allies, this as a result of a flash disk containing all of Big Fish’s criminal details handed to Celine by Gun during their time on the run, who in turn hands it over to the police.
The Film did Gun justice in establishing him as the main character, although there was room for more to be revealed in accordance to how he got to know that Big Fish was the one who killed his mother, the process of him hatching a plan to take him down and whether the kidnapping was an opportunity for him to execute his plan since bad blood arose between him and Big Fish as a result of it.
Big Fish is a man of few words, his presence speaks volumes, by diving into how he became this revered and feared gang leader would have made him more menacing, maybe a backstory of his rise to the big leagues, the challenges he had to face, a chance to make the audience resonate with him more. As an established gang boss, I’d imagine he wouldn’t do anything without a valid reason, without gaining anything from it, hence making me curious on the significance of him killing Gun’s mother in the middle of the street yet she had nothing on him.
The cast did their characters justice, mastering them to the latter, a bit more work could have been done on the delivery but the overall performances were worth sitting through.
My biggest highlights of the film were the cinematography done by Tiony Sila, sound effects done by Diana Bondo and the action sequence coordinated by JB Gichuhi and Hulk Mutinda of which were well established.
In partnership with Sanaa Post and Sanaa Academy, the premiere event was one to remember. Local Film enthusiasts from all over the country came to celebrate the efforts put in by producer Decima Wesa and her team.
‘Elegant’ being the dress code, the stars of the film didn’t disappoint alongside their families who came to support them on their milestone.
As a student film screened in an IMAX Theatre, Dace Media and Film Gurus under KCA University have shown potential, one that is set to accomplish more breakthroughs in the Film industry.
