After a prime premiere at Anga iMax Diamond Plaza 2 in Parklands, Likale Muyonga’s film Mtaa Yangu has packed cinema halls to raving audiences.

The story of Mtaa Yangu is set in Mwiki town where residents start receiving eviction leaflets from the area Member of Parliament (M.P) Okelo and Governor, who are keen on bringing in a foreign investor. As if the unrest weren’t enough for the locals, Kiprotich, a local gang leader and his gang members continue to harvest ‘tax’ from the locals, forcing the residents to take refuge and security from Gunner ’G’, another crime lord. This state of unease forces the town to be engulfed in turmoil as residents demand for their rights and a place to call home.

Gunner ’G’ is forced to get into ‘talks’ with the M.P (played by Nathan Songa)- since the legislator owes the crime lord a favour after he helped him clinch power, or so Gunner ‘G’ thinks. However, Okelo turns a deaf ear to the plight of his constituents and leaves an entitled G feeling betrayed. Their meeting is heated and the lawmaker begins to plot G’s murder by seeking the services of two rogue cops.

Meanwhile G finds love in a local girl named Catherine but as fate would have it, his sleazy lifestyle is never too far away. In an operation, Ras, one of G’s men, kills Njeri’s brother.

Knowing that this may jeopardise his relationship, the gang leader hides the truth of her brother’s death, choosing instead to live with the searing guilt. He devises a way to send Catherine away to medical school as a last-gasp effort to fix the crisis in his own life.He hatches a plan to quit the life of crime in order to save the residents of Mwiki and his relationship.

However, he first has to rob money from the M.P. Will he succeed?

Mtaa Yangu continues to show in cinemas across town, running from October 7 until October 12 at Greenspan Mall, Donholm, Anga Panari Centre, Diamond Plaza 2 and Century Cinemax, The Junction.
