As Youth Theatre Kenya (YTK) celebrates a decade of empowering young people through the arts, the organisation proudly presents The Iron Snake, an original musical theatre production that reimagines one of East Africa’s most defining historical moments through the voices of a new generation.
Developed as part of YTK’s 10th anniversary celebrations, The Iron Snake reflects the organisation’s commitment to creating original African theatre that honours the past while inspiring the future. Blending original music, movement, drama and African storytelling traditions, the production explores the construction of the Kenya–Uganda Railway and the profound impact it had on the communities whose lives and futures were forever changed. At its heart, the musical is a story of identity, resilience, leadership, and the choices that shape a nation.
Set during colonial East Africa, The Iron Snake follows a community facing drought, division and uncertainty as the British Empire advances the railway across their land. Guided by an ancient prophecy, a group of courageous young people embarks on a sacred journey to restore harmony. Along the way, they encounter Indian railway workers, witness the immense sacrifices behind the railway’s construction, and confront the betrayal and assassination of a revered Nandi leader during what was meant to be a peace negotiation.
Ultimately, the young people choose unity over personal ambition, bringing healing to both their community and the land. More than a historical retelling, The Iron Snake invites audiences to reflect on Kenya’s shared heritage, the cost of progress, and the enduring power of hope. Through an exceptional cast of young performers, stirring original music, and dynamic choreography, the production demonstrates theatre’s extraordinary ability to preserve history, ignite meaningful dialogue, and inspire future generations.
